Rules of the Competition
Participants The Award is granted annually in two categories: 1. Artists below the age of 32 at the date of the competition deadline; 2. Artists aged 32 and over. Artists in both categories must either reside in Bulgaria or be Bulgarian nationals living abroad. Previous winners of the Gaudenz B. Ruf Award are not entitled to compete again. All forms of visual art other than performance, film and applied arts are accepted. Candidates are requested to submit works of the most recent period. In addition, they may also submit projects for works that are already sufficiently concrete and advanced to ensure completion within the following months. Candidates who participated in earlier competitions are requested to include in their portfolios mainly new works not previously submitted. Jury The entries are judged by a jury composed of the Swiss donor and some five qualified representatives from the field of Bulgarian and international art or art sciences. The mandates of the five representatives are for a set time. Selection Procedure The entries are evaluated over two rounds: 1. A shortlist is established from the portfolios received. 2. The shortlisted candidates are invited to present their works at an exhibition in Sofia in the autumn. At the same time, a catalogue illustrating a selection of their works will be published. Certain parts of it will later be included in the Award website. All details will be set out in a contract. A limited financial contribution towards the completion of a project may in well founded cases be made to a candidate who has been shortlisted. Requests should include budget details and invoices. After viewing the exhibition, the jury will select the winners in the two categories. The jury does not enter into any correspondence regarding its decisions. Awards The Gaudenz B. Ruf Award amounts to 2.500 Euros for the winner of the first category (young artists) and 4.500 Euros for the winner of the second category. Competition Portfolio The portfolio should include: 1. An application form indicating family name, first name, place and date of birth, nationality, profession, current correspondence address in Bulgaria, telephone/mobile numbers, email address. The form can be downloaded from the website. 2. An artistic biography of not more than two pages. A translation in English, German or French would be helpful. 3. A commented documentation of recent works/projects, which can include photographs, printed materials, sketches and CD ROMs. Simply indicating a website is not sufficient. Candidates should not send originals of works or slides. Each document should be dated and bear the name of the author. The portfolio should not exceed the format: 50cm x 40cm x 5cm. All personal information will be treated as confidential and not released to third parties.
